Veteran Notes – Organizations

For many veterans, the transition from military service to civilian life can be challenging. Finding a renewed sense of purpose, camaraderie, and personal growth is often an essential part of that journey. The Military Equestrian Foundation was created to help bridge that gap through the unique connection between veterans, horses, and equestrian sports.

A Mission Built Around Service and Horsemanship

The Military Equestrian Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to introducing military personnel and veterans to the world of horsemanship and polo. Through equestrian education, training opportunities, competitive events, and community engagement, the organization provides participants with a unique avenue for personal development and continued service-minded fellowship.

The foundation embraces the historic connection between warriors and horses. Long before modern military vehicles existed, mounted soldiers relied on horsemanship as a critical battlefield skill. Today, the organization carries that tradition forward by using equestrian activities to build confidence, discipline, leadership, and teamwork among participants.

How the Program Works

One of the organization’s signature offerings is its annual Commander-in-Chief Cup Intro to Polo Clinic, a free event designed to introduce military personnel to polo. Participants receive instruction on the rules of the game, safety practices, riding techniques, and basic polo skills. The clinic allows newcomers to experience the sport in an encouraging, supportive environment regardless of prior riding experience.

The typical process includes:

1. Introduction to Equestrian Sports

New participants learn the fundamentals of horse handling, stable safety, and basic riding techniques. The goal is to help individuals become comfortable around horses while building trust and confidence.

2. Polo Fundamentals

Students receive instruction on:

  • Polo rules and gameplay
  • Safe riding techniques
  • Proper use of polo equipment
  • Ball striking and mallet control
  • Team communication and strategy

The instruction emphasizes safety while making the sport accessible to military members and veterans with varying experience levels.

3. Competitive Opportunities

As riders gain proficiency, they may have opportunities to participate in competitive events organized or supported by the foundation. These events promote friendly rivalry, sportsmanship, and continued skill development.

Signature Programs and Events

National Commander-in-Chief Cup

The annual National Commander-in-Chief Cup brings together teams representing different branches of the U.S. military. Competitors face off using a split-string format, where teams alternate riding the same horses. This format places greater emphasis on horsemanship and riding ability rather than relying solely on superior mounts.

Churchill-Roosevelt Cup Series

The Churchill-Roosevelt Cup Series honors two historic leaders, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Theodore Roosevelt, both of whom served in their nations’ militaries and shared a passion for polo. The series features military competitors from the United States and the United Kingdom and serves as a symbol of enduring partnership between allied forces.

Chapple Cup Exchange

The foundation also supports military polo participation abroad through the Chapple Cup Series, where U.S. military teams travel to the United Kingdom to compete against the Armed Forces Polo Association. These events strengthen international military relationships while showcasing the discipline and teamwork shared by service members on both sides of the Atlantic.

District Cup

In partnership with Liberty Hall, members of the foundation have participated in the District Cup, an event offering the unique experience of playing polo on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The event introduces the public to one of the world’s oldest team sports while highlighting military participation in equestrian competition.

Why Horses Matter for Veterans

Working with horses requires patience, communication, self-control, and trust. For veterans, these activities can help rebuild confidence while creating meaningful connections with others who understand military culture.

Equestrian activities encourage participants to:

  • Develop leadership skills
  • Improve focus and discipline
  • Build camaraderie with fellow veterans
  • Engage in healthy outdoor recreation
  • Learn new athletic and horsemanship skills
  • Challenge themselves physically and mentally

The combination of teamwork, competition, and personal growth makes equestrian sports a natural fit for many former service members.
