July marks Military Consumer Month, a nationwide campaign dedicated to safeguarding Veterans, Service members, and military families from the rising wave of scams targeting our community. The mission is simple and urgent: empower the force with knowledge that protects their money, identity, and hard‑earned benefits.

This year’s theme is anchored by powerful imagery—the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon executing precision discipline beneath the thunder of an F‑18 flyover. It’s a reminder that readiness isn’t just physical or tactical. It’s financial. It’s digital. It’s protecting what you’ve earned.

Why Military Consumer Month Matters

Scammers increasingly target the military community because they know:

  • Service members move frequently
  • Veterans rely on digital systems for benefits
  • Military families often juggle multiple responsibilities
  • Trust within the community is high

That trust is exactly what criminals exploit.

Military Consumer Month exists to counter that threat by providing clear, actionable guidance to help the community stay ahead of fraud attempts—whether they come through email, text, social media, or fake “official” calls.

The FTC Military Consumer Toolkit

To support this effort, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) developed the Military Consumer Toolkit, a resource designed to help the Military Consumer Network reach:

  • Active‑duty Service members
  • Veterans
  • Military spouses
  • Dependents
  • Caregivers

The toolkit includes educational materials, fraud‑prevention guides, and shareable content you can push out to your battle buddies, family, and networks. The more people who know the signs of fraud, the harder it becomes for scammers to succeed.

If Something Looks Wrong—Act Immediately

Your VA benefits are a lifeline. If you notice:

  • A missing VA payment
  • A discrepancy in your benefits
  • Suspicious activity in your direct deposit account

Contact VA immediately at 1‑800‑827‑1000.

If you believe you’ve been targeted or victimized by fraud, report it through:

  • VSAFE.gov
  • (833) 38V‑SAFE

Rapid reporting protects you—and helps protect the next Veteran.

Strengthening the Shield

Military Consumer Month isn’t just about awareness. It’s about building a culture of vigilance.

  • Share fraud alerts with your unit
  • Talk to your family about common scams
  • Help older Veterans navigate digital threats
  • Encourage your network to report suspicious activity

Just like in uniform, security is a team effort.

VeteranJaime Assessment

Military Consumer Month is more than a campaign—it’s a readiness posture. The threats facing today’s military community aren’t only on the battlefield. They’re online, in inboxes, and in financial systems. By staying informed, sharing resources, and reporting issues quickly, Veterans and Service members can protect their benefits with the same discipline they brought to the mission.
