Preparedness and Training – Self-Defense and Firearms
Dry fire is not a substitute for live fire. It is the place where real standards are built.
Most shooters treat dry fire casually. They rush through arrays, accept loose grips, and let their eyes chase the sights instead of driving them. That kind of practice does not create improvement—it just repeats mediocrity. Veterans already understand the difference between going through the motions and deliberate repetition. The same principle applies here.
Hold yourself to the standard you would demand under live fire. Grip pressure must match what you use on the range. Sight pictures must be honest. If the shot would not count in a match or a real engagement, it does not count in dry fire either. Be observant. Record yourself if needed. Most people discover they are far less disciplined than they thought once the camera is rolling.
Train your eyes first. The sights should follow your eyes, not the other way around. Look to the exact spot on the target you intend to hit, then bring the gun there. Treat it like a mouse pointer—eyes lead, sights arrive. This single habit cleans up transitions faster than almost anything else.
If you have the space, move. Standing still is rare in real stages or real situations. Dry fire that only happens from a static stance leaves a gap. Practice movement and watch how the sights behave. Refine the technique until the gun tracks cleanly.
One useful drill is simple: set up multiple targets at different distances or difficulties. Start from a ready position and engage each with two simulated rounds. Alternate the order. Force yourself to change focal points—hard focus on tight shots, target focus on open ones. Keep a strict par time and demand clean execution every repetition.
Positive habits only form when the standard is non-negotiable. Short, focused sessions done correctly beat long, sloppy ones. Do the quiet work with full attention and the live fire will reflect it. That is how you keep improving even when ammunition is limited or range time is scarce.
